Cooling System Services

Burning fuel makes a great deal of heat, and an engine only runs properly inside a narrow band of temperature. The cooling system is what holds it there. Coolant is pumped through passages cast into the engine, carries the heat out to the radiator, and gives it up to the air moving through the fins. A thermostat decides when that circuit opens, hoses carry the fluid, and the same loop feeds the heater core that warms the cabin in winter.

It is a system that tends to fail all at once. A hose or a water pump seal that has been weeping quietly for months becomes a roadside stop on the first hot day, and an engine run hot for even a short time can turn a modest repair into a head gasket. Catching it early is most of the job.

Parts and services

Radiator

The radiator is where the heat actually leaves the car. Hot coolant from the engine runs through a core of thin tubes and fins, and air moving across those fins, either from the car's motion or from the fan, carries the heat away. Radiators fail from corrosion inside, from stones and road salt outside, and from the plastic end tanks going brittle with age. A radiator that is even partly blocked will hold temperature fine on a cool morning and then let go climbing a grade in August.

Symptoms:

  • The temperature gauge climbs above normal
  • Bright green, orange or pink fluid pooling under the front of the car
  • Steam or a sweet smell from under the hood
  • The coolant reservoir keeps needing topping up

Water Pump

The water pump is what moves coolant around the circuit at all. It is driven off the engine, usually by the serpentine belt or the timing belt, and it turns whenever the engine turns. The bearing and the shaft seal are the parts that wear. A seal that starts weeping leaves a trail below the pump, and a bearing on its way out makes a rumble or a whine that changes with engine speed. If the pump stops, the engine overheats within minutes.

Symptoms:

  • A whine or rumble from the front of the engine that rises with revs
  • Coolant dripping from below the front of the engine
  • The temperature gauge rising quickly
  • A wobble or play in the pump pulley

Thermostat

The thermostat is a temperature controlled valve between the engine and the radiator. It stays shut while the engine warms up, which is what gets you heat quickly on a cold morning, then opens to let coolant reach the radiator once the engine is at temperature. They fail in both directions. Stuck shut and the engine overheats. Stuck open and it never reaches operating temperature, which means weak heat, worse fuel economy and more engine wear.

Symptoms:

  • The heater blows cool or takes a long time to warm up
  • The temperature gauge reads low or never settles
  • Overheating in traffic but not at speed
  • Fuel economy has dropped for no obvious reason

Hoses and Clamps

The upper and lower radiator hoses and the smaller heater hoses carry every drop of coolant in the system. Rubber hardens and cracks with heat cycling, and the failure is often sudden: a hose that looked fine can split and empty the system in under a minute. We check them by feel as much as by eye, since a hose that has gone spongy or rock hard is near the end whatever it looks like.

Symptoms:

  • Visible cracking, bulging or a soft spot in a hose
  • Crusty white or coloured residue around a clamp
  • Coolant loss with no obvious puddle
  • A hose that feels rock hard or spongy when squeezed

Coolant Service

Coolant is not only antifreeze. It carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the aluminium, iron and solder the system is built from, and those additives are used up over time. Old coolant turns acidic and starts eating the radiator, the heater core and the water pump seal from the inside, which is why a flush is far cheaper than what it prevents. Modern long life coolants last longer than the old green kind, but they are not permanent, and mixing types causes its own problems.

Symptoms:

  • Coolant looks rusty, muddy or has particles floating in it
  • It has been more than five years since the last flush
  • The heater output has slowly got weaker
  • You are not sure what type is in the system

Heater Core

The heater core is a small radiator behind the dashboard. Hot coolant runs through it and the blower pushes cabin air across it, which is where your heat comes from. Because it sits inside the dash, a leaking heater core shows up as a sweet smell, a greasy film on the inside of the windscreen, or damp carpet on the passenger side rather than a puddle on the driveway. The part is usually inexpensive; the labour to reach it is not, so it is worth catching early.

Symptoms:

  • A sweet syrupy smell inside the car
  • Damp or stained carpet on the passenger side
  • The windscreen fogs up and is greasy to wipe
  • Little or no heat while the engine runs at normal temperature
